Controversy Catapults Claude to the Top of Apple’s App Store

A policy dispute with the United States Department of Defense has ultimately yielded positive results for Anthropic, as its AI chatbot Claude has become the top free application on Apple’s App Store. Claude secured the leading position by surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, according to Engadget.

Claude’s popularity has risen rapidly since the latter part of last week. On Saturday night, it claimed the number one position and maintained it on Sunday morning. At the end of January, Claude was ranked outside the top 100. By mid-February, it had entered the top 20 and recently climbed from sixth to fourth before ultimately reaching first place.

The surge is linked to a policy disagreement between Anthropic and the Pentagon. Anthropic’s Chief Executive Officer, Dario Amodei, sought to attach two conditions to the use of Claude by the U.S. Department of Defense: preventing the use of the company’s AI models for mass surveillance of U.S. citizens and prohibiting their deployment in fully autonomous weapons systems. However, the Pentagon reportedly favored the removal of all such restrictions.

In response to this stance, the Trump administration became displeased and, last Friday, directed all federal agencies to cease using Anthropic’s technology. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic a “national security supply risk.”

Just hours later, OpenAI announced a contract with the Pentagon. Its Chief Executive Officer, Sam Altman, claimed that their agreement includes similar security guardrails.

Speaking during a session on X on Saturday, Altman described the Anthropic incident as an “extremely frightening precedent” and expressed hope for a better resolution. Anthropic, for its part, stated that it has recently been receiving a record number of new daily registrations. Since January, free users have increased by 60 percent, and paid subscribers have more than doubled.

Parallel to Claude’s ascent, calls have emerged online urging users to boycott ChatGPT. Many users have advocated deleting the app “as quickly as possible” and have called for the cancellation of Apple’s partnership with OpenAI.
