Kids’ Content Control: Netflix Launches Ad-Free ‘Playground’ Gaming App
Netflix has launched a separate gaming app for children. Named ‘Playground’, the app is designed for children aged 8 years or below and can be used free of charge on smartphones and tablets. All Netflix members will be able to use it, and it will feature no advertisements or in-app purchases.
The most significant advantage of the app is that it functions without an internet connection. As a result, children will be able to play uninterrupted even during long বিমান (airplane) journeys or while staying outdoors. This gaming experience is also expected to be easily acceptable to parents.
Initially, the app includes games from several popular franchises. These include:
- Playtime with Peppa Pig (mini-games featuring Peppa Pig and friends)
- Sesame Street games, featuring mini-games, memory card games, and connect-the-dots games with Elmo, Big Bird, and Cookie Monster
- Games based on Dr. Seuss stories
- Bad Dinosaurs racing game
- Sticker book collection and jigsaw puzzles
Netflix has stated that the game library on this platform will be expanded further in the future. Currently, the app is available in the United States and several other countries worldwide. A global rollout is scheduled for 28 April.
The decision to introduce a dedicated gaming app reflects Netflix’s growing interest in children’s gaming. However, the company has recently faced setbacks in its interactive gaming division.
In 2024, it shut down its AAA gaming studio and removed several games from its services. Through this new children-focused app, Netflix appears to be aiming to create a safer and more enjoyable gaming environment.
