Submarine Cable Service Slowdown: SEA-ME-WE 5 Maintenance May Impact Internet Speeds
Due to maintenance work on an international submarine cable, internet speeds may be slightly slower from 10:00 am on April 9 until 6:00 am on April 13, spanning three days and eight hours.
This information was disclosed in a press release issued on Wednesday, April 8, by Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited (BSC PLC).
According to the statement, a maintenance activity titled “S, 1.5.1 Shunt Fault Repair” has been undertaken under the SEA-ME-WE 5 consortium for the country’s second submarine cable installed in Kuakata. As a result, data services may experience disruption for a duration of 3 hours and 8 minutes between April 9 and April 13.
The release further stated that a technical fault was initially identified in the SEA-ME-WE 5 system, and repair work has already commenced. However, it assured that general internet users are unlikely to face significant impact. Authorities also said that normal conditions will be restored as quickly as possible.
In this regard, the General Manager (Operation and Maintenance) of BSC PLC noted that there is no risk of a major disruption, as arrangements are in place to route data through alternative paths. Nevertheless, some internet service providers (ISPs) and bandwidth-dependent institutions may experience temporary slowdowns.
