As part of expanding its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, Amazon has announced a $12 billion investment in the US state of Louisiana. The company disclosed the information in a statement on Monday (February 23), according to Reuters.

From San Francisco, Amazon stated that the data center will be constructed in the northwestern region of the state. The project is expected to create 540 full-time jobs. In addition, it will generate further supporting employment opportunities for electricians, air conditioning technicians, and other related roles.

Earlier this month, in its fourth-quarter earnings report, Amazon said its capital expenditure will reach $200 billion in 2026, a significant increase from $131 billion in 2025. Following the announcement, the company’s share price declined slightly. So far this year, its stock price has fallen by 9.4 percent.

Spending by technology companies has surged significantly to meet growing demand for AI software, computer chips, and other infrastructure. This year, companies have pledged to spend at least $630 billion, raising concerns among some investors about a potential AI-driven economic “bubble.”

However, there are concerns among some communities regarding the establishment of data centers, as they can put pressure on local power grids and require substantial water usage. Amazon said it will form a $400 million fund to address the impact of its data centers in Louisiana. The company also stated that water will be used solely for cooling and other necessary purposes.

Amazon further said it will bear “100 percent of the costs” of the Louisiana data centers and is working with Southwestern Electric Power Company to provide the required electrical infrastructure.
