Elon Musk’s space company SpaceX and its artificial intelligence (AI) subsidiary xAI are participating in a secret U.S. Department of Defense Pentagon competition. The initiative aims to develop autonomous drone swarm technology that can be operated via voice commands, according to Reuters.

A report by Bloomberg News states that in January this year, the Pentagon announced this $100 million challenge. Musk’s companies are among the few selected to participate, according to the report.

Over a six-month competition, the participating teams must develop technology capable of converting voice commands into digital instructions to control multiple drones simultaneously. The challenge is jointly managed by the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group (DAWG).

Musk’s participation has sparked renewed debate. In 2015, Musk signed an open letter with AI and robotics researchers advocating a global ban on “offensive autonomous weapons” and warning against developing new human-killing tools. However, he recently integrated xAI with SpaceX, completing the merger ahead of SpaceX’s planned initial public offering (IPO) this year. xAI’s website recently posted job ads for engineers with “secret” or “top secret” security clearances, signaling their involvement in defense projects.

The competition will proceed in five phases—from software development to real-world testing. A Pentagon official stated that these drones are expected to be used in offensive operations, and human-machine interaction will enhance the system’s effectiveness and lethality.

Last year, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI secured $200 million contracts with the Pentagon to enhance AI capabilities. Analysts note that Musk’s direct move into weapon technology marks a significant shift in his strategic positioning.
