Following Instagram’s lead, YouTube is now entrusting artificial intelligence (AI) with the task of verifying users' ages. According to tech outlet Engadget, the U.S.-based video streaming giant will initially roll out the system as a pilot program among a select group of users in the United States, with plans to expand the feature in phases globally.

Reports suggest that YouTube will use machine learning tools to analyze user behavior—such as the types of videos they search for, watch, and how long the account has been active—to determine whether a user should be categorized under a teen account.

YouTube stated, “If machine learning determines an account is operated by a teen, we will stop showing personalized ads to that user.” Additionally, teen accounts will be equipped with tools promoting “digital wellbeing” and other safeguards to ensure a safer online experience.

Since launching "supervised teen accounts" in 2021, YouTube has been enhancing its safety measures for younger audiences. The company claims that the machine learning model has already been deployed in several countries and has shown promising results.

YouTube isn’t the only platform using AI to estimate users' real ages. Meta—the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger—has implemented similar tools, largely due to the prevalence of inaccurate age information provided by users.

However, YouTube seems to place greater responsibility on users themselves. The platform stated, “If AI mistakenly determines someone is under 18, users will be allowed to verify their age using a credit card or government-issued ID. In such cases, the responsibility for correcting the error lies with the user.”

In contrast, Meta allows users to simply update their age without needing stringent documentation, making it easier to rectify AI-based errors on their platforms.
