Pakistan’s President, PM Congratulate Tarique Rahman on BNP’s Majority
Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has congratulated the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its leader Tarique Rahman for securing an absolute majority in Bangladesh’s national election. He extended his greetings on their electoral victory and mandate to form the government.
In a separate message, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated Tarique Rahman on the party’s landslide win.
In a statement, President Zardari congratulated the people of Bangladesh for successfully completing elections in 299 constituencies. He noted that the election was held with the participation of more than 127 million registered voters. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Bangladesh’s sovereignty and democratic aspirations.
Asif Ali Zardari remarked that the election presents an opportunity for South Asian countries to move beyond past challenges and look ahead. He alleged that regional cooperation—particularly the activities of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC)—had long been held hostage by India. Founded in Bangladesh in 1985, he claimed the regional body had been rendered ineffective by India.
He expressed hope that the new political environment in Dhaka would help foster more balanced, independent, and mutually respectful relationships across South Asia.
President Zardari also conveyed his interest in working with the new government in areas such as trade, defense, cultural exchanges, and regional forums. He wished stability, progress, and prosperity for Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), congratulated Tarique Rahman and the people of Bangladesh. He said, “I look forward to working closely with the new leadership of Bangladesh. We will work together to further strengthen our historic and fraternal multifaceted bilateral relations and achieve our shared goals of peace, stability, and development in South Asia and beyond.”
