After months of uncertainty and drama, the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Central Students’ Union (SUCSU) election is finally set to be held on 20 January, ending a 28-year hiatus.

Following the lifting of a suspension order and the Election Commission’s decision to resume the electoral process, campaign activities regained momentum on Friday, 16 January, after Jummah prayers. Near the SUST mosque, candidates and their supporters were seen distributing posters and cards to voters along the roadside.

Many candidates were observed shaking hands and handing out campaign leaflets. Approaching a group of voters, one candidate said warmly, “Brother, how are you? Seeking your vote and prayers.”

According to the election code of conduct, all campaign activities must conclude 48 hours before voting day, with campaigning permitted from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. As per this schedule, campaigning will officially end at 10:00 pm on Saturday. With limited time left, candidates and their supporters are making intense efforts to reach voters at least once.

Candidates said that campaigning was disrupted for a day or two due to movements demanding the SUCSU election. Some have even demanded an extension of the campaign period.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, 15 January, the Islami Chhatra Shibir–backed panel released its election manifesto. Candidates from Chhatra Dal and independent panels are preparing theirs. Some independent candidates have included their manifestos directly in their leaflets, while others are presenting “special” issue-based pledges. Many are also seeking feedback and suggestions from voters.

Campaign promises focus on improving the quality of education, upgrading residential halls, expanding sports facilities, and ensuring various welfare measures for female students.

Commenting on the election atmosphere, Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Abul Mukit Mohammad Mokaddes said, “The SUCSU election is very close, so competition among candidates is naturally intense. I am hopeful that with everyone’s participation, a fair and festive election will be held.”

Asked about the criteria for choosing candidates, female student Humaira Jannat said, “After a long time, this election is a significant event for us. We want candidates who will work for us, speak on our behalf, and demonstrate positive attitudes and behaviour.”

According to the Election Commission, SUCSU has a total of 9,015 voters. The central students’ union comprises 23 posts, including 18 editorial positions—such as Vice President (VP), General Secretary (GS), and Assistant General Secretary (AGS)—and five member posts. A total of 97 candidates are contesting the election.
