Post-Uprising Media: Expectations and Outcomes Discussed at NSTU Journalists’ Forum

A discussion meeting titled “Media After the Mass Uprising: Expectations and Achievements” along with the farewell of the 6th Executive Committee and the handover of responsibilities to the 7th Executive Committee of the Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) Journalists’ Association was held on Tuesday afternoon, January 13.

The event took place at the university’s IQAC conference room, with NSTU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Rezwanul Haque attending as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he said journalism is a vast and highly responsible field, urging journalists to highlight administrative shortcomings through positive and constructive criticism. He also expressed hope that if NSTU’s problems and students’ complaints are raised consistently, the administration would be able to take effective initiatives.

Speaking as a special guest, NSTU Treasurer Dr Mohammad Hanif (Murad) said university journalists had played an important role during the July movement. However, he cautioned that fake news poses a serious threat to individuals, institutions, and society, emphasizing the importance of truthfulness in news reporting.

Others present at the event included NSTU Regent Board member and Dean of the Faculty of Education Professor Dr Md Jahangir Sarker, Dean of the Faculty of Science Professor Dr Mohammad Mahinuzzaman, Adviser to the NSTU Journalists’ Association and Proctor AFM Arifur Rahman, Director of the Student Counseling and Guidance Department Dr Mohammad Shiblur Rahman, and Assistant Director of IQAC and Chairman of the Department of Educational Administration GM Rakibul Islam.

The chief discussant was Dhaka University Journalists’ Association President Mahiyuddin Mujahid Mahi, while the special discussant was Muhammad Nurul Karim, founding convener of the NSTU Journalists’ Association. Speakers at the discussion highlighted the role and challenges of the media in the aftermath of the 2024 mass uprising.
