Bangladesh Breaks World Record with 54-Flag Skydiving Display
Bangladesh has set a new Guinness World Record by staging the largest-ever flag-bearing parachuting display, marking 54 years of independence with a spectacular skydiving feat. The record was achieved on December 16, Tuesday, at around 12:45 pm, when 54 paratroopers of “Team Bangladesh” simultaneously carried the national flag during a coordinated sky dive.
The historic free-fall jump was conducted from an altitude of 12,000 feet and officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s largest flag-parachuting display. Of the 54 paratroopers, 46 were from the Bangladesh Army, five from the Navy, two from the Air Force, and one was the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun.
Paratroopers numbered 49 to 54 carried the names of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers who were killed in Sudan, honoring their sacrifice. The overall supervision of the free-fall jump and duties as Drop Zone Commander were carried out by Brigadier General M M Imrul Hasan.
The parachuting display took place at Tejgaon Old Airport as part of the Victory Day celebrations. On the same occasion, the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force conducted separate fly-past displays, while a special Victory Day band show was also organized.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus attended the event as the chief guest. Members of the Advisory Council, chiefs of the armed forces, political leaders, diplomats from various countries, and people from different walks of life were also present.
Similar fly-past displays by the armed forces will be held in other cities across the country. In addition, the Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), and Ansar will organize band shows nationwide. All events will remain open to the public.
The formal observance of Victory Day began at dawn on December 16 with a 31-gun salute in Dhaka. At sunrise, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar.
