A two-day international symposium titled “Quality Assurance through Accreditation in Engineering Education” is underway at the Grand Ballroom of Hotel InterContinental Dhaka. The 4th edition of this event, jointly organized by the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE) and the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), features technical sessions, discussions, research presentations, and experience-sharing by engineering experts from home and abroad.

Organizers expressed optimism that the symposium will further strengthen the international standing and recognition of Bangladesh’s engineering education, opening new avenues for high-quality academic practices.

The symposium was inaugurated at 9:00 am on Monday, 8 December. In his welcome address, BAETE Vice Chairman Professor Dr. S. Reza Chowdhury emphasized the importance of accreditation, saying, “Accreditation is essential for ensuring international quality. Through continuous academic improvement, institutional coordination, and global collaboration, we can elevate the standards of engineering education in Bangladesh.”

The chief guest, Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, said, “Ensuring quality in engineering education is vital for sustainable development. Such international gatherings play a crucial role in aligning our education system with global benchmarks.”

Among others, Washington Accord Chairman Professor Kai Sang Lock, Sydney Accord Deputy Chair and ABET Director of International Engagement and Governance Ms. Daniella Iacona, and IEB President Engineer Mohammad Rezaul Islam also addressed the event.

Professor Kai Sang Lock stated, “Following full recognition under the Accord, accredited engineering degrees from Bangladesh will gain international acceptance. However, maintaining this recognition requires consistent preservation of quality standards. Only through quality-driven education can Bangladeshi engineers compete successfully in the global arena.”

Ms. Daniella Iacona noted, “International recognition is vital for ensuring educational excellence. Bangladesh’s initiative will bring long-term benefits for future generations.”

Engineer Mohammad Rezaul Islam added, “IEB has long been working to enhance the quality of engineering education. This international symposium will further strengthen those efforts.”

The opening ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from BAETE Chairman Professor Dr. Tanvir Manzur. He stated, “The core objective of this symposium is to ensure internationally benchmarked engineering education. It will serve as an effective platform toward achieving that goal.”
