Global Scholars Olympiad Lights Up Young Minds in Dhaka
A day-long Global Scholars Olympiad was held in Dhaka to foster scientific thinking, analytical skills, logical reasoning, and creativity among children and adolescents. The event took place on Saturday, January 17, at the campus of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), with thousands of students participating.
Among the prize-winning institutions were Lighthouse International School, European International School, Sir John Wilson School, Glenrich International School, Navy Anchorage School and College, Dhaka, Scholastica, English Academy, Manarat International School, Universal Tutorial, St Joseph International School, BAF Shaheen English Medium School, Wisdom International School, Academia, Green Hill International School and College, School of the Nation, Milestone School and College, Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College, British Standard School, and Lords – An English Medium School.
Jointly organised by Space Innovation Camp and IUB’s Department of Computer Science, the Olympiad was conducted in three age-based categories. Competitions were held across six subjects—science, mathematics, technology, environment, general knowledge, and brain games.
Ahead of the main event, a global online registration process was conducted, alongside preparatory online quiz practice sessions, modern mock test software, and multiple academic guideline sessions. These initiatives allowed students to assess and improve their preparation from home, making the Olympiad more inclusive and technology-driven.
According to the organisers, top-performing students were selected through online preliminary and secondary rounds to compete in the final stage. The selected finalists took part in the Global Scholars Olympiad Grand Finale, where they demonstrated their talents through on-site examinations.
Following the final round, gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded in each subject across all categories. In total, 54 medals were distributed, establishing the event as one of the country’s largest academic Olympiads.
Speaking as the chief guest at the grand finale and prize-giving ceremony, Professor Daniel W. Lund, Vice Chancellor (in charge) of Independent University, Bangladesh, said the Olympiad provided an important educational experience for young learners. He noted that beyond competition, students were gaining opportunities to assess their knowledge, reasoning, and thinking skills across diverse subjects—boosting confidence and encouraging a deeper interest in learning.
Special guest Mohammad Mahdi Uz Zaman, Vice President of Cybage and US Country Director of the Global Scholars Olympiad, described the initiative as timely and impactful. He said the platform allows students to evaluate their intellectual abilities across disciplines while connecting Bangladeshi learners to the global academic community.
Ariful Hasan Apu, President of Space Innovation Camp, said the Olympiad offers students from around the world a chance to come together in Bangladesh to test their abilities. Beyond competition, he added, participants experience cultural diversity, Bangladeshi hospitality, and opportunities to build lasting global friendships—making the event a true convergence of knowledge, culture, and inspiration.
