Dengue Deaths Deepen: Five More Die, 1,139 Hospitalised in 24 Hours
Five more people have died from dengue within a 24-hour period—from 8:00 am Saturday to 8:00 am Sunday. Among the deceased, three were from Dhaka. Two patients died while undergoing treatment at hospitals under the Dhaka South City Corporation, and two others died in hospitals within the Mymensingh Division. Another patient died while receiving treatment at a hospital under the Dhaka North City Corporation. During the same period, 1,139 patients were admitted to hospitals across the country.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Sunday (16 November) by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
According to the release, the 1,139 new admissions include:
181 patients in Barishal Division, 141 in Chattogram Division, 246 in Dhaka Division (outside the two city corporations), 182 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 118 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 119 in Khulna Division (outside the city corporation), 96 in Mymensingh Division (outside the city corporation), 46 in Rajshahi Division (outside the city corporation), 9 in Rangpur Division (outside the city corporation), and 1 patient in Sylhet Division (outside the city corporation).
During the same 24-hour period, 1,199 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals nationwide. With this, the total number of recovered patients this year has risen to 81,442.
The DGHS further reported that from January to date, a total of 84,997 patients have been hospitalised due to dengue. So far this year, 336 people have died from dengue, while 58 deaths occurred in just the first 16 days of the current month.
The dengue situation escalated dramatically in October. According to DGHS data, 15,866 patients were admitted in September. This number surged to 22,520 in October—indicating a 42 percent increase in just one month.
Dengue first emerged in Dhaka in 2000, infecting 5,551 people and causing 93 deaths. The most severe outbreak occurred in 2023, when more than 300,000 people were infected and 1,705 deaths were recorded. In 2024 (January to 31 December), 101,214 people were hospitalised and 575 dengue-related deaths were recorded. By comparison, from 1 January to 31 December 2023, a total of 1,705 deaths and 321,179 hospital admissions were documented.
