OpenAI has officially unveiled its new artificial intelligence-powered web browser, ChatGPT Atlas, marking what analysts describe as a major move to challenge Google’s longstanding dominance in online search.

According to TechCrunch, the browser will initially be launched for macOS, with versions for Windows, iOS, and Android to follow.

ChatGPT Atlas will have the ChatGPT assistant directly integrated into the browsing experience, allowing users to “converse with search results” in real time. A built-in feature called ‘Sidecar’ will analyze on-screen text and provide contextual assistance—minimizing the need for manual copy-pasting.

The browser also introduces a ‘Browser History’ feature, enabling ChatGPT to better understand users’ previous searches and online activities to deliver more personalized answers. Another key addition, the ‘Agent Mode’, will allow the browser to automatically perform small web-based tasks on behalf of users.

However, OpenAI has confirmed that these advanced features will initially be available only to Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers.

Company executives stated that “ChatGPT will redefine the way people work in the future.” The question now is how far Atlas can go in competing with Google Chrome’s three billion-strong user base.
