Battling Breast Cancer: Boosting Awareness for Early Detection
October is globally observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month to emphasize the importance of awareness and timely detection in combating the disease. The key to successfully managing breast cancer lies in early diagnosis, awareness, and proper treatment.
In Bangladesh, nearly 13,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and around 7,000 die from it. Hence, raising awareness remains the most effective means of prevention. In continuation of this global initiative, a discussion session on breast cancer awareness was held at Sukhé.
Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter, public health specialist and senior faculty member at the Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and also representing the Center for Cancer Care Foundation (CCCF), highlighted “the importance of early detection” in the fight against breast cancer.
Public health expert and executive committee member Dr. Abu Jamil Faisal emphasized “the need for a healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and avoidance of tobacco-related products.”
Professor Dr. Shahanaz Chowdhury, Head of the Department of Community Medicine at Bangladesh University of Health Sciences, stressed “the significance of community-level awareness and management.”
The discussion was effectively moderated by Dr. Hossain Al-Amin, Clinical Manager of Grameen HealthTech Limited (GHL).
The event began with welcoming remarks from the company’s senior officials and concluded with a closing speech delivered by Ahmed Arman Siddiqui, CEO of Grameen HealthTech Limited.
