Chattogram to Commence Clean Energy from Waste Project
The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) is set to begin renewable energy production from waste in the near future. In line with this initiative, Japanese firm JFE Engineering Corporation will conduct a feasibility study for the second phase of the Integrated Waste Management Project in the CCC area during the 2025–26 fiscal year. The study will focus on identifying the volume of energy-yielding waste, determining its suitability for use as raw material, and exploring the technical and informational requirements for successful project implementation.
On Monday, August 11, CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain held a meeting at the CCC office in Tigerpass with representatives from Japan’s Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ) and JFE Engineering Corporation.
The Japanese delegation included MOEJ Advisor Eiji Kohga; JFE Engineering Corporation General Manager Takahashi Zen; JFE Bangladesh Country Manager Oohashi Kenta; Marketing Manager Bhaskar Saha; Yachiyo Engineering Company Limited Japan’s Manager Masayuki Shijo, Professional Naoki Uehata, and Associate Tota Takagi; Yachiyo Engineering’s local expert Abul Hasnat Md. Ashraful Alam; and consultants Mahmud Ibne Sadeq and Tanvir Ahmed from PT Arunia Mitra Optima.
According to meeting sources, the discussions emphasized conducting the feasibility study to identify challenges in implementing the project, with a focus on renewable energy generation, reducing CO₂ emissions from energy production, and establishing a modern waste management system. Both sides also stressed enhancing technological and technical cooperation between Japan and CCC to help make Chattogram an environmentally friendly city.
“I want to begin renewable energy production from waste without delay,” Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said. “Although several organizations have shown interest, acquiring land and machinery for the project remains quite challenging. However, seeing Japan’s involvement gives me hope, and I will extend my utmost cooperation for its implementation. Improper waste management is causing waterlogging in the city and damaging the environment.”
The meeting was also attended by CCC Secretary Md. Ashraful Amin, Chief Cleaning Officer Commander Ikhtiar Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, and Malaria and Mosquito Control Officer Md. Sharful Islam Mahi.
