MIT Maintains Top Spot in Global University Rankings, Dhaka University Leads in Bangladesh

Once again, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States has claimed the title of the world's best university, according to the latest rankings released by the UK-based education and research organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on Thursday, June 19. Among the top 10 universities globally, four are from the United States and four from the United Kingdom.

Bangladesh has only three universities ranked within the top 1,000 globally, with the University of Dhaka—often referred to as the "Oxford of the East"—retaining its position as the country’s highest-ranked institution. However, the university has seen a steep drop of 30 positions over the past year, now placed at 584th globally.

The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) holds the second-best position nationally, ranked in the 761–770 range, maintaining the same tier as the previous year.

North South University ranks as the third-best university in Bangladesh. It has slipped from the 901–950 bracket last year to the 951–1000 category in the latest rankings. Other Bangladeshi institutions featured in the extended list include Daffodil International University, BRAC University, Islamic University of Technology, Jahangirnagar University, University of Rajshahi, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), East West University, Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), and Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).

On the global scale, after MIT, Stanford University (USA) secured the third position, followed by the University of Oxford (UK), Harvard University (USA), and the University of Cambridge (UK) at fourth, fifth, and sixth places respectively. ETH Zurich (Switzerland) ranked seventh, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) secured the eighth spot. University College London (UCL) came in ninth, while the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) rounded out the top 10.

The rankings, available on the official QS website, reflect global academic and research performance, with increasing emphasis on employability, faculty-student ratio, and international outlook.
