Sarjis Slams Silence: NCP Leader Questions Army’s Role in Anti-Fascist Struggle

Sarjis Alam, chief organizer of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has called for a clear and active stance from the Bangladesh Army in the fight against fascism. In a Facebook post from his verified account on Sunday evening (June 1), he raised questions over the military’s response to recent political violence and its alleged inaction over the past nine months.

In a post titled "Rangpur and Awami League’s B Team: The Jatiya Party Issue!", Sarjis wrote, “Three days ago in Rangpur, Mostafa — the repeatedly illegitimate mayor nominated by the Jatiya Party through illegal elections — took to the streets again to reclaim his position. He led a protest rally alongside the Awami League’s pet B Team Jatiya Party and the terrorists from Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League.”

Sarjis alleged that the Jatiya Party, by negotiating with the Awami League and India, has pretended to be in opposition while enjoying all the privileges of collaboration. “Even when BNP and Jamaat refrained from participating in the farcical and illegal elections and endured thousands of injustices, the Jatiya Party posed as an opposition only to legitimize the Awami League’s government and enjoy state benefits,” he added.

He further stated, “Two days ago, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader arrived in Rangpur and began coordinating with local Jatiya Party members and Awami League-backed terrorists to return to the field.”

Sarjis accused Jatiya Party supporters of initiating violence against a peaceful anti-fascist protest in Rangpur. “When the anti-fascist unity in Rangpur organized a non-violent demonstration against GM Quader and the Jatiya Party, it was the Jatiya Party terrorists who attacked first. Later, an incident occurred where a motorcycle was set on fire near GM Quader’s residence.”

He criticized the authorities’ response, writing, “The army in Rangpur treated this minor act of arson and vandalism with utmost seriousness and launched the largest operation in the past nine months. The President and Secretary of BNP’s metropolitan chapter, as well as the convener of the anti-discrimination movement in the district, were interrogated. While questioning is not inherently problematic, the authorities have ignored the root causes and those responsible for the events leading up to this incident.”

Sarjis questioned, “Those who are so concerned over a burnt old motorcycle at GM Quader’s house — how many operations have they conducted in the past nine months to capture Awami League-backed killers and terrorists? How many were arrested? The same Mostafa, who has repeatedly won illegal mayoral elections and turned Rangpur into a hub of corruption and plunder, how many days of operations were conducted to apprehend him?”

He went on to ask, “How many operations have been launched to reclaim public assets illegally seized by Awami League occupiers in various parts of Rangpur?”

Sarjis concluded, “The Jatiya Party terrorists who, under the leadership of the illegitimate mayor Mostafa, attacked the anti-fascist protest — how many of them have been targeted in operations? GM Quader, who provoked the situation by holding meetings with local terrorists, what actions have been taken against him?”

He emphasized, “We still hold the Bangladesh Army in high regard. But in the fight against fascism, we want to see their clear stance and actions. If the banned Awami League and its associate organizations attempt to return under the guise of their B Team, the Jatiya Party, such attempts must be thwarted.”
