Lilaboti Camp Celebrates Pi Day and Einstein’s Birth Anniversary

On March 14, marking both the birth anniversary of scientist Albert Einstein and Pi Day, a special Lilaboti Camp was organized for young female mathematicians. The three-day camp, held in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, brought together 20 girls from different parts of the country. Participants were awarded certificates based on their respective academic categories.

The certificates were presented by Professor Dr. Mohammad Kaykobad, President of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad. He was accompanied by Professor Dr. B. M. Mainul Hossain, Director of the Institute of Information Technology at the University of Dhaka; Shahadat Khan, CEO of Talikhata; Professor Farzana Alam, Executive Director of the Association for Environment and Human Resource Development; Dr. Rizwana Riaz, Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, BUET; and Dr. Tania Sharmin Khalek, Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Dhaka.

Speaking about the event, Munir Hasan, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee, shared an exciting update regarding Bangladeshi students gaining admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He stated, "MIT sends out its acceptance letters on Pi Day. This year, two of our students have been accepted—Nahian from Dhaka College, who won a bronze medal in the Mathematical Olympiad in 2023 and 2024, and Akhtar from Holy Cross, who secured a bronze in the European Mathematical Olympiad last year. Additionally, Soumya Jeet from Sylhet, who won a gold medal in last year’s Informatics Olympiad and is currently in the 11th grade, has received an early acceptance."

Hasan further highlighted that this is the first time three Bangladeshi students have been accepted to MIT in a single year, whereas previously, only two were admitted per year on a few occasions. "Every year, more students who are involved in Olympiads are gaining admission to top universities worldwide. Many of them have now completed their education and are working in major tech companies, launching startups, pursuing academia, or contributing to hospitals both in Bangladesh and abroad," he added.
