For the first time, North Korea has conducted a test launch of artificial intelligence-powered missiles, marking a new phase in the country’s efforts to modernize its strategic weapons systems.

The missile tests were carried out under the direct supervision of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, according to the country’s state-run news agency Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), which confirmed the development on Wednesday, May 27.

KCNA reported that the launches included tactical ballistic missiles, artillery rockets and AI-operated precision cruise missiles. The tests were successfully conducted on Tuesday as part of an effort to evaluate the operational effectiveness and targeting accuracy of newly developed weapons systems.

Following the launch, Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction with the performance of the AI-powered cruise missile, stating that it was capable of accurately striking targets at distances of up to 100 kilometers.

According to the state media report, the weapons were developed under a “special mission warhead” project aimed at strengthening both destructive capability and precision strike performance.

After significantly expanding its long-range ballistic missile and nuclear capabilities in recent years, North Korea is now focusing on upgrading its conventional and tactical weapons arsenal with advanced digital and AI-based technologies.

Pyongyang has already announced plans to deploy more sophisticated weapons systems near the border with South Korea.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong Un recently signaled further expansion of the country’s nuclear arsenal and operational readiness. He also urged the United States to acknowledge and respect North Korea’s nuclear status.
