The U.S. Department of Commerce has begun granting Nvidia licenses to export its H20 chips to China, a U.S. official confirmed on Friday. The move removes a major barrier for the artificial intelligence industry leader to access a key market, according to Reuters.

Last month, the United States lifted an April ban that had halted sales of the microprocessor, which was specifically designed for the Chinese market. Nvidia previously stated that the restrictions would cause an $8 billion loss in sales for the July quarter.

Nvidia applied for the license in July and was given assurances of swift approval. However, it remains unclear how many licenses have been issued or which companies in China will be eligible to receive the chips.

China had earlier raised security concerns, but Nvidia has maintained that its products contain no “backdoors” that would allow remote access or control.
