Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has inaugurated six short-term courses of the Bangladesh Cinema and Television Institute (BCTI). On Wednesday, 5 April, in his inaugural speech, he advised participating students to give equal importance to ethical standards and a sense of responsibility alongside acquiring technical knowledge.

Among others present at the event were Director General of the National Institute of Mass Communication Muhammad Hiruzzaman NDC, Director General of Bangladesh Betar A S M Zahid, Executive Director of BCTI Abul Kalam Mohammad Shamsuddin, and Chairman of the Bangladesh Film Certification Board S M Abdur Rahman.

In his speech as the chief guest, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said that mass media and social media play a crucial role in shaping the human psyche. In the present world, the influence of these platforms is continuously increasing, making the establishment of ethical control over them one of the major challenges of the time.

The minister stated, “People naturally tend to listen to, understand, and trust others. Based on this trust, influential individuals in society can shape public thinking, which can play a positive role on one hand but also carries the risk of misuse on the other.”

He further said that those working in mass media, film, and the creative sector now bear significant responsibility. Without adherence to ethics and professional standards, these powerful platforms may become harmful to society. He added that the government is working to make creative and training institutions more modern, expanded, and effective in the future.

Speaking about the impact of cinema, the minister said that film is a powerful medium capable of making people laugh, cry, and be deeply influenced. He called for this power to be utilized for the benefit of humanity and civilization.
