Former employees of Grameenphone staged a peaceful demonstration in front of GP House in the capital, demanding the payment of a justified 5% delay penalty, carrying banners stating deprivation for 16 years. The program, held on Thursday morning, 2 April, under the slogan “One Demand Only—When Will You Pay the 5%?”, saw the participation of more than fifty former employees. They alleged long-standing unpaid dues, breach of promises, and prolonged delays, calling for immediate settlement of their claims.

Speakers at the gathering alleged that issues such as unlawful termination and delays in paying workers’ rightful dues are unjust and unacceptable. They warned that the movement would continue if their legitimate demands are not fulfilled. They also called on workers to remain united.

At the rally, speakers further stated that unlawful termination by Grameenphone, misappropriation of workers’ dues, and breach of commitments constitute clear injustice and cannot be accepted under any circumstances. They also issued a warning that no institution can sustain itself in this country by denying workers’ rights, and that the movement will continue until their rightful demands are met. The speakers expressed a strong stance against corrupt intermediary syndicates and urged workers to stay united to ensure justice.

The organizing body of the demonstration stated that if all outstanding dues, including the 5% delay penalty, are not paid promptly, more stringent programs will be announced in the future.
