ChatGPT Now References XAI’s Grokipedia in Responses
Elon Musk’s company XAI–developed AI-based encyclopedia, Grokipedia, has started appearing in ChatGPT’s responses, according to a report by the British daily The Guardian. The report notes that ChatGPT’s GPT-5.2 version cited Grokipedia at least nine times in over a dozen answers. TechCrunch covered the story.
Grokipedia was launched by XAI in October 2025, reportedly in response to claims that Wikipedia is biased against conservatives. However, the platform faced criticism soon after its launch.
Reports indicate that while many articles on Grokipedia were directly copied from Wikipedia, some included controversial claims and even derogatory language about certain social groups.
The Guardian observed that ChatGPT generally uses Grokipedia for relatively obscure topics. For instance, certain claims about historian Sir Richard Evans, previously refuted by The Guardian, were cited. In contrast, widely discussed topics like the January 6 Capitol attack or HIV–AIDS were not referenced from Grokipedia. Similar citations have been seen in Anthropic’s Claude, the report added.
An OpenAI spokesperson stated that their aim is to source information from a variety of publicly available references and perspectives. Critics, however, argue that relying on such sources increases the risk of misinformation and bias.
