Committee Reviewing BSc and Diploma Engineers’ Professional Demands Gets Extended Tenure

The tenure of the committee formed to examine the legitimacy of professional demands raised by BSc degree-holding and diploma-holding engineers has been extended for another term. The Cabinet Division has issued a notification extending the committee’s tenure until January 31. Previously, the committee’s extended term expired on January 15.

The eight-member committee, formed on August 27, is chaired by Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Adviser to the Ministries of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; Road Transport and Bridges; and Railways. In addition to four advisers, the committee includes representatives from engineers’ professional organizations.

Other members of the committee are Adilur Rahman Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Industries and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works; Chowdhury Rafiq-ul Abrar, Education Adviser; Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ministry of Water Resources; Engineer Mohammad Rezaul Islam, President of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB); Engineer Md. Kabir Hossain, President of the Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB); Professor Dr. Engineer Tanvir Manjur, Chairman of the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE), Bangladesh; and Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, who serves as the committee’s Member Secretary.

Initially, the committee was instructed to submit its report to the government within one month. Subsequently, its tenure was extended once more, and it has now been extended again.

In late August, students from BUET and other engineering universities staged protests by blocking Shahbagh intersection, demanding the fulfillment of three key demands. They also attempted to lay siege to Jamuna, the residence of the Chief Adviser.

According to sources, the committee will examine various aspects of the professional demands of BSc and diploma engineers and submit a comprehensive report with recommendations to the government.
