Indonesia Suspends Access to Musk’s Grok Over AI-Generated Explicit Content Risks
Indonesia has temporarily blocked access to Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s xAI, citing concerns over the risks posed by AI-generated sexually explicit content. The decision came into effect on Saturday, making Indonesia the first country to take such action against the platform. Reuters reported.
According to the report, the move follows growing concerns and investigations in Europe and Asia over sexually explicit content produced using Grok.
Earlier on Thursday, xAI acknowledged shortcomings in its safety mechanisms that allowed the generation of explicit material. The company announced that it would restrict image generation and editing features to paying users only as a corrective measure.
In a statement, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, said that the creation of non-consensual sexual deepfakes constitutes a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and digital safety. The ministry has also summoned officials from X for discussions on the issue.
Elon Musk said on X that anyone using Grok to create illegal content would face consequences equivalent to uploading such material directly.
Indonesia, home to the world’s largest Muslim population, enforces strict laws against online pornography, and authorities have reiterated their commitment to protecting digital spaces from harmful and unethical content.
