AI Slop Surges on YouTube as Low-Quality Videos Flood the Platform

The rapid accessibility of AI-powered video creation tools has led to a sharp rise in low-quality, AI-generated content on YouTube. According to a report by video editing platform Kapwing, more than 21 percent of YouTube’s total content is now dominated by what it terms “AI slop”—trivial, low-value, and largely meaningless videos.
PCMag reported the findings.

To compile the report, researchers created a new YouTube account and analysed the first 500 Shorts videos shown to the account. The analysis revealed that 104 of those videos were AI-generated. While such content was initially limited, its presence increased rapidly over time.

South Korea topped the list in terms of AI slop consumption, with leading AI slop channels in the country collectively amassing nearly 82.5 billion views. Pakistan ranked second, followed by the United States in third place. The top US-based AI slop channel alone recorded 1.28 billion views, generating an estimated USD 2.66 million in revenue.

The report also noted that the spread of AI-generated content is not limited to YouTube; AI-created text and videos are proliferating across the internet. Even workplaces are witnessing the rise of so-called “work slop”, referring to low-quality AI-generated professional content.

In response to this growing concern, several platforms have already introduced new features aimed at detecting and regulating AI-generated content.
