Gartner Predicts Over 40% of Agentic AI Projects to Be Abandoned by 2027
Global research firm Gartner has projected that more than 40% of agentic artificial intelligence (AI) projects will be abandoned by 2027 due to rising costs and unclear business value, according to a report by Reuters.
Although agentic AI is designed to make autonomous decisions and perform tasks independently, most of the current projects remain at the conceptual stage and are not yet effective in real-world applications. Gartner analyst Anushree Verma stated, “Most initiatives are still immature and are not equipped to deliver on complex business objectives.”
The firm further noted that while there are currently thousands of vendors promoting agentic AI solutions, only about 130 of them possess genuine capabilities. Many companies are merely rebranding basic AI assistants or chatbots as agentic systems for marketing purposes.
Despite the current limitations, Gartner forecasts that by 2028, agentic AI will autonomously make at least 15% of day-to-day decisions and will be embedded in 33% of software applications.
