Toilets to Tech: TOTO Taps Semiconductor Supply Chain Surge
A Japanese company that challenges the notion that a firm should focus solely on its core product is TOTO. Globally renowned for its high-end bidet or “Washlet” toilets, the company is now playing a significant role in the global RAM or memory chip shortage. Surprisingly, TOTO is generating a substantial portion of its revenue by supplying a critical component used in memory chip manufacturing.
This striking development was reported by Engadget on Friday (May 1).
Key Role of a Toilet Company in Memory Chips?
TOTO operates an “Advanced Ceramics” division that produces specialized components used in NAND memory chip manufacturing.
- E-chucks: TOTO is currently the world’s second-largest producer of “electrostatic chucks,” which are used to hold silicon wafers in place during chip production.
- Profit: This year, revenue from TOTO’s ceramics division increased by 34 percent compared to the previous year. Notably, 55 percent of the company’s total operating profit of $343.5 million came from this ceramics division—not from toilet sales.
- Investment: To meet the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips, TOTO plans to invest an additional $192 million in the next fiscal year.
Japan’s Other ‘Unexpected’ Tech Players
TOTO is not alone. Several unconventional Japanese companies are making a strong impact in the semiconductor sector:
- Kao: Although primarily known for cosmetics, one of its divisions produces specialized agents used in semiconductor cleaning processes.
- Ajinomoto: The globally recognized producer of seasoning salt or MSG is investing nearly $160 million to manufacture special insulating films used in motherboards.
AI Boom and Emerging Opportunities
The surge in AI, driven by major chipmakers like Nvidia, is reshaping companies that might previously have seemed unrelated to the sector, such as TOTO and Ajinomoto. However, analysts caution that if the rapid expansion of the AI sector turns into a “bubble,” these companies could face significant financial risks.
For now, there is little doubt that this Japanese “toilet master” company has emerged as a crucial support in addressing the global memory chip shortage.
