Nahid Islam Resigns, Declares Wealth Transparency
Nahid Islam, a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Movement, resigned from his position as an advisor to the Interim Government’s Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Tuesday. His resignation comes as he steps into a new political role alongside students and the general public.
The following day, Wednesday, he took to his Facebook account to disclose his financial details, stating that he had no bank account before assuming the advisory role. He also attached a copy of his bank statement to support his claim.
In his post, Nahid wrote, “Before assuming the position of advisor, I did not have a bank account. On August 21, I opened an account with Sonali Bank as required for receiving my honorarium as an advisor. I am now presenting the account's transaction details from August 21, 2024, to February 26, 2025, to the public.”
He further detailed that during his six months and five days of service, a total of BDT 1,006,886 was deposited in the account, while BDT 996,188 was withdrawn. He affirmed that he holds no other bank accounts apart from this one.
Nahid, a graduate and postgraduate of the Sociology Department at the University of Dhaka, also stated that neither he nor any member of his family acquired any property during his tenure as an advisor.
He clarified, “During my tenure as an advisor, neither I nor any member of my family (wife/mother/father) purchased any land or flats anywhere in Bangladesh.”
In addition, he shared the financial details of his personal secretary.
“My personal secretary has BDT 36,028 in his account with Islami Bank Bangladesh. After assuming his role as my secretary, he has not purchased any property in Bangladesh, either in his name or in the name of his family (wife/mother/father),” Nahid wrote.
He further assured that transparent records of assets belonging to him, his personal staff, and relevant individuals are well-documented and will be made available if necessary.
Reminding the public of their rights under the Right to Information Act 2009, he noted that all disclosed financial information is subject to verification through any government office in Bangladesh.
Nahid, also known by his nickname Fahim, hails from South Banasree, Khilgaon, Dhaka.
