RUET Expels Chhatra League Leaders, Punishes 44 for Disciplinary Violations

Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has taken disciplinary action against 44 students, including the president and general secretary of the banned organization Chhatra League’s RUET unit. The university authorities found them guilty of involvement in attacks on protesters during the July uprising and academic misconduct. The disciplinary measures include expulsion and other penalties.

The decision was made during a meeting of the university’s Student Discipline Committee on Wednesday, February 26, presided over by RUET Vice-Chancellor Professor S.M. Abdur Razzaq. Among those expelled are RUET Chhatra League President Fahmid Latif Lion and General Secretary Soumik Saha, along with several other activists of the organization.

Those permanently expelled include Fahmid Latif Lion, a student of the Civil Engineering Department from the 2014-15 session, and Soumik Saha, a student of the CSE Department from the 2016-17 session. Others expelled for life are Shashwata Saha Sagar from the Mechanical Engineering Department (2019-20 session) and Mrinmoy Kanti Biswas from the Civil Engineering Department (2019-20 session).

Additionally, allegations against RUET's Assistant Engineer of the Engineering Section, Naeem Rahman Nibir, Data Processor of the Physics Department, Mohidul Islam, and Sub-Assistant Programmer of the Education Section, A.K.M. Anwarul Islam, were found to be true. The university has recommended taking necessary legal actions against them in the relevant forums.

Following an investigation report from August 19, it was also decided to temporarily expel several students from residential halls for possessing weapons, drugs, and other prohibited substances. Further action will be taken based on an upcoming investigation.

Meanwhile, two students have been suspended for four semesters (two academic years) for engaging in academic dishonesty during exams.

Professor Md. Robiul Islam Sarker, Director of the Student Welfare Office and Member Secretary of the Student Discipline Committee, confirmed the information on Wednesday.
