Following the exclusion of Bangladesh’s pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has ordered all IPL matches and related programs to be suspended from broadcast in Bangladesh until further notice.

On Monday, 5 January, the ministry issued a letter to television channels directing them to halt the airing of IPL cricket matches in the country. Although the letter did not specifically mention online or OTT platforms, sources indicate that all private sports channels and online streaming services in Bangladesh are expected to comply with the ban.

The directive noted that the Indian Cricket Board’s decision to exclude Mustafizur from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad for the upcoming IPL, starting 26 March, lacked any known justification and had caused disappointment, distress, and anger among the Bangladeshi public.

The notice emphasized that not only matches but all IPL-related programs must also be suspended. The letter, signed by Assistant Secretary Md. Firoz Khan, requested compliance “until further instructions are provided” and stated that the order was issued in the public interest and with proper authority.

In reaction, Indian Congress leader Shashi Tharoor described the situation as embarrassing for India in a social media post. He told the Indian Express that the decision to exclude Mustafizur was “unnecessary and unjustified” and highlighted that Bangladesh-Pakistan comparisons are misleading, noting the distinct diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India.

Mustafizur was supposed to be Bangladesh’s sole representative in this year’s IPL. His early exclusion triggered strong reactions within Bangladesh’s cricket community, leading to the interim government’s historic decision to suspend IPL broadcasts.
