IEB Detects Major Engineering Defects in Quake-Affected Dhaka Buildings
The Engineers Institution, Bangladesh (IEB) has identified significant engineering and technical faults in several buildings in the capital that were damaged in the recent earthquake. The inspection team, led by IEB Vice President (Services & Welfare) Engineer Niaz Uddin Bhuiyan, included multiple experts in civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering. They visited several sites including Mitali School (Swamibagh), the building at 102/1 Sutrapur, and Barnomala School in Demra.
During the inspections, the team examined the buildings’ structural integrity, column-beam distress, need for retrofitting, foundation stability, and overall construction quality. After visiting the affected structures in Swamibagh, Sutrapur, and Demra, the expert delegation prepared a preliminary assessment report on Sunday, 23 November.
Their initial findings revealed deficiencies in proper structural design, use of substandard materials or insufficient reinforcement, lack of retrofitting, failure to comply with the Bangladesh National Building Code (BNBC), and inadequate post-construction monitoring.
IEB believes that these shortcomings pose serious risks to the durability and safety of the buildings. Therefore, a “Detailed Engineering Assessment is urgent.”
The delegation stated that an immediate Detailed Engineering Assessment (DEA) is essential to accurately determine the actual condition of the damaged buildings. Only through this assessment can it be determined whether the structures are usable or what type of repairs are required.
IEB emphasized that to mitigate earthquake risks in Dhaka and across the country, strict enforcement of the BNBC, safety audits of older buildings, necessary retrofitting, and advanced training for construction-related professionals are now critical imperatives.
The institution further noted that, if necessary, it is prepared to work with the government in conducting structural assessments of damaged buildings, preparing safety guidelines, and offering technical advice. Warning developers, building owners, and local authorities, IEB reiterated that constructing or renovating buildings without adhering to BNBC puts public safety at risk. Ensuring engineering safety is now indispensable for urban resilience and protection of human lives.
