DU Deputy Registrar Detained for Defiant ‘Don’t Care’ Post
After the announcement of the death penalty verdict against ousted and fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for their roles in ordering crimes against humanity during the July mass uprising, Dhaka University (DU) Deputy Registrar Lovelu Molla Shishir has come under fire. He posted on social media a photo card of Sheikh Hasina with the caption “I Don’t Care,” an act students say defied the country’s law and incited violence online.
The elected representatives of Dhaka University students detained him from his residence and handed him over to the police.
Around midnight on Monday, 17 November, students handed Shishir over to Shahbagh Police Station in the Dhaka University area.
Fatima Tasnim Juma, DUCSU’s Secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movements, wrote in a Facebook post regarding the incident:
“We have handed Lavlu over to the police. Our position will remain the same regarding the teachers involved in genocide. Anyone trying to act noble or curry favor over this issue will also be held accountable.”
Juma added:
“We did not come here to flatter anyone or seek power. We are standing on the blood of two thousand martyrs, sworn to bring justice for them. There is no place here for traitors or treachery.”
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Mansoor told the media,
“Several students of Dhaka University handed over Lovelu to Shahbagh police. Legal action is being taken against him.”
