BRAC University Builds Bridges with Association of Commonwealth Universities in London Meeting
A delegation from BRAC University recently met with leaders of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) at the organization’s headquarters in London. The meeting marked an important step in BRAC University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its global engagement and academic collaboration.
Representing BRAC University were Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Farhat Anwar and Registrar Dr. David Dowland. From the ACU, attendees included Secretary General Professor Colin Riordan and Head of Communications and Public Affairs Dr. Laura Pritch.
The discussion centered on how Commonwealth countries can further promote social development, sustainable progress, and application-based research partnerships. Participants emphasized leveraging higher education to build resilient and just societies. Key topics included fostering tolerant civil communities, advancing sustainable urban development, and expanding research exchange initiatives to address global challenges.
Welcoming the dialogue, Professor Colin Riordan, Secretary General of the ACU, expressed optimism about visiting Bangladesh in 2026. He also voiced hope that such discussions between BRAC University and other ACU member institutions would continue in the future.
BRAC University became a member of the ACU in 2021, joining this prestigious global network of over 500 universities across the Commonwealth. Through this membership, BRAC University has been contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting knowledge exchange, capacity development, and academic research.
Currently, there are 16 ACU member universities in Bangladesh — a testament to the organization’s long-standing commitment to academic collaboration and development in the region.
Founded in 1913, the ACU is the world’s first and oldest international university network, working to advance excellence in higher education and foster cooperation among universities globally.
The meeting in London was part of BRAC University’s broader visit to the United Kingdom, aimed at expanding partnerships with leading universities and research institutions. This collaboration is expected to enhance innovation, inclusion, and international engagement from the Global South.
The visit also supports BRAC University’s mission to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals — particularly in quality education, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, and partnerships for progress.
