Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Shadik Kayem has demanded the cancellation of the decision banning the use of mobile phones within 400 yards of polling centres and called for ensuring reasonable mobile phone use for voters and other relevant stakeholders.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Monday, February 9, after meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner.

Shadik Kayem said the upcoming election is crucial for people across the country. He alleged that the decision to prohibit mobile phone use within 400 yards of polling centres is undermining the electoral atmosphere and was taken to facilitate election manipulation at polling stations.

He described the decision as undemocratic, stating that the Chief Election Commissioner has assured them that the decision would be reconsidered and changed. He also said they demanded a reversal of the decision to cancel BNCC, adding that they would not accept any attempt to install individuals in power through a manipulated or farcical election.

He further emphasized that a level playing field must be ensured for all political parties and candidates. To this end, he called for the administration and law enforcement agencies to remain fully neutral in order to guarantee a free, fair, and impartial election. If these demands are implemented, he said, public confidence will increase and the election process will become more transparent and credible.
