Tragic Loss in Tech Community: NVIDIA Senior Data Scientist Dr. Irfan Al-Hussaini Passes Away
Dr. Irfan Al-Hussaini, a brilliant alumnus of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Senior Data Scientist at world-leading AI tech giant NVIDIA, has reportedly passed away while undergoing treatment in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the United States. His sudden demise has sparked widespread grief across BUET, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), NVIDIA, and the global AI research community.
Neither his family nor official medical authorities have publicly released the exact cause of death, leading to heartfelt condolences alongside discussions across social media platforms.
Academic Brilliance & Research Legacy
Son of prominent BUET Civil Engineering Professor and earthquake specialist Dr. Tahmid Al-Hussaini, Irfan graduated from BUET’s Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE). He then pursued higher studies in the US, earning both his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech.
During his academic tenure, Dr. Irfan specialized in interpretable machine learning for healthcare, biomedical data analysis, document filtering, and integrating domain knowledge into AI models. His research papers were published in tier-1 international conferences including NeurIPS, SIGIR, CIKM, ICASSP, BioNLP, and MLHC.
Following his Ph.D., he joined NVIDIA as a Senior Data Scientist in Atlanta, focusing on healthcare AI applications.
An Inspiring Journey
In May 2024, Georgia Tech published an official story spotlighting Dr. Irfan and his wife, Dr. Fabia Farlin Athena. Although both attended BUET around the same time, they met at Georgia Tech, got married in Atlanta in 2022, and celebrated their Ph.D. graduation together in Spring 2024.
Remembered by BUET peers not only as a top-tier scholar and IEEE Signal Processing Cup contributor, but also as a skilled winger on the university football team and a deeply humble individual, Dr. Irfan’s untimely departure marks a tragic loss for Bangladesh's tech and scientific representation on the global stage.
