Bezos Bets on Beyond-Earth Data: Predicts Gigawatt Space Servers Within Two Decades

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has predicted that gigawatt-scale data centers could be built in space within the next 10 to 20 years. He said that space offers uninterrupted solar energy, which could make such facilities far more efficient than those on Earth, Reuters reports.

Bezos made the remarks while speaking at the Italian Tech Week 2025 held in Turin, Italy. Comparing the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to the internet boom of the early 2000s, he said, “Despite the speculative risks, its long-term impact will be profound and positive.”

According to Bezos, deploying massive training clusters or AI servers in space would be the most suitable approach since there is “24-hour sunlight, no clouds, and no rain.” He added, “Within the next two decades, space-based data centers will be operated at a lower cost than those on Earth.”

However, Bezos cautioned that challenges such as maintaining and upgrading data centers in space, along with the risks associated with rocket launches, will remain significant obstacles. He further noted that, much like the internet, “the benefits of AI will permeate society deeply and endure.”
