Microsoft is reportedly preparing to launch a free, ad-supported version of its cloud gaming service—offering limited access to select titles. According to a report by The Verge, the company has already begun internal testing of the ad-backed Xbox Cloud Gaming model, Engadget reports.

In this new version, users will be able to play certain games, including older titles under the “Xbox Retro Classics” collection. Additionally, select games will be available on specific weekends through the Free Play Days initiative—all without requiring a Game Pass subscription.

However, the service will come with restrictions: users must watch several minutes of advertisements before each game session, and playtime will be limited. Currently, the trial version allows up to five sessions per month, with each session lasting one hour.

The free version is expected to roll out across computers, Xbox consoles, handheld devices, and web browsers. Details regarding the streaming quality for the free tier remain undisclosed. The maximum resolution of 1440p will remain exclusive to Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, while others will be limited to 1080p.
