South Korea to Seek Fair Chip Tariff Terms with U.S.

South Korea plans to negotiate with Washington to secure favorable conditions on U.S.-imposed chip tariffs, a spokesperson for the country’s presidential office said during a television briefing on Sunday. The report is from Reuters.

The spokesperson stated that Seoul will emphasize the importance of ensuring that South Korea is not disadvantaged compared to other competing countries under U.S. tariff policies on memory chip imports.

According to the spokesperson, a joint fact sheet of the trade agreement signed with the United States last year included assurances that South Korea would not face unfair or excessive tariffs on chip imports. This position was reiterated in response to recent announcements by the Trump administration regarding tariffs on artificial intelligence-related chips.

Earlier, on Saturday, South Korea’s trade minister noted that U.S. tariffs on advanced computing chips would have limited impact on the country’s companies.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are among the world’s leading memory chip manufacturers.
