Banglalink Brings Bangladesh’s First Solar-Powered Data Center

Digital operator Banglalink has launched a solar-powered data center in Gazipur, becoming the first mobile network operator (MNO) in the country to run such a facility using environmentally friendly energy.

The operator installed an 80-kilowatt solar power system at its data center in Gazipur, aligning the initiative with Bangladesh’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Masterplan 2030 (Section 2.1.3 (2)). According to Banglalink, the solar power system was established through rigorous evaluation and strategic planning to ensure maximum energy generation and efficiency.

Speaking about the initiative, Banglalink’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, Huseyin Turker, said:
“By taking this green initiative, Banglalink has set a new benchmark for sustainable innovation in Bangladesh, which will play a vital role in protecting the environment. With this solar power system, approximately 0.13 GWh (gigawatt hours) of green energy will be generated annually. As a result, around 60 tons of carbon emissions will be reduced each year, while the company will save nearly USD 12,600 in annual energy expenses. The system has been installed on 9,000 square feet of unused rooftop space. We expect the full investment cost of the project to be recovered quickly. In the future, Banglalink will prioritize utilizing more unused spaces to enhance green energy production. We believe that alongside reducing negative impacts on the environment, everyone should come forward to increase the use of renewable energy, build a sustainable future, and reduce carbon footprints.”
