China Charts Course for 6G Commercial Rollout by 2030

China, a global leader in technology, is preparing for the commercial launch of sixth-generation (6G) networks by 2030. The announcement was made by Wu Hequan, a prominent expert at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who described 6G as a “technological revolution.” He made the statement on Thursday during the ongoing Global 6G Conference 2025, according to Chinese state media outlet CGTN.

The event, held under the theme "Frontier Innovation Driving 6G Development", began in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, and will run until April 12.

Wu noted, “From 1G to 4G, technological applications were largely limited to voice and data services. Though 5G was introduced for industrial use, it did not yield the anticipated growth in the sector. This experience has shaped both the expectations and challenges for 6G.”

He also emphasized that next-generation smartphones will be entirely AI-driven, transforming users from passive content consumers into active content creators by making the process faster and more accessible.

Yu Xiaohu, director of Purple Mountain Laboratories and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, added that 6G technology would go beyond offering high-speed internet. “It will herald a new era of innovation, integrating sensing and low-altitude communication systems,” he said.

According to Yu, the 6G era will feature a “super-converged technology system” that brings together communications, computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and industrial control, reshaping how future digital infrastructure functions.
