KUET Expels 10 Students for Life Over Torture Allegations

Ten students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have been expelled for life, and disciplinary actions have been taken against four others following allegations of brutally torturing a fellow student. Among the four penalized students, the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSc Engg) certificates of four have been revoked. Additionally, two students will not receive their certificates for three years, one will face a five-year delay in receiving their certificate, and all three will be permanently denied a testimonial. Another student has been given a formal warning.

The students expelled for life are Sadman Nahiyan Sezan, General Secretary of KUET’s chapter of the banned organization Chhatra League, along with Raihan Ahmed, Saad Ahmed, Sajedul Kabir, Adnan Rafi, Rizuamul Islam Rizvi, Fuaduzzaman Fahim, Md. Mehedi Hasan Mithu, Md. Safat Morshed, and Fakhrul Islam.

The university authorities took these disciplinary measures after confirming that the accused students had subjected a fellow student to inhumane torture and engaged in academic misconduct during exams.

Moreover, students Mostak Ahmed will not receive his certificate for five years and will be permanently denied a testimonial, while Shuvendu Das and Fariar Jamil Nihal will face a three-year delay in receiving their certificates and will also be permanently denied testimonials. These 13 students were found guilty of brutally assaulting a fellow student, leading to the university’s decision.

Separately, another student has been suspended for six months and issued a warning for academic dishonesty during examinations.

Professor Dr. Mohammad Sultan Mahmud, Secretary of the KUET Student Discipline Committee and Director of Student Welfare, stated on Monday, February 3, that the university’s disciplinary committee made these decisions in a meeting held on January 27. The meeting was presided over by KUET Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Masud.
