Meta’s AI Pendant Push: Social Media Giant Bets on Next-Gen Wearable AI
After smart glasses, Meta Platforms is now reportedly developing an artificial intelligence-powered wearable device in the form of a necklace or pendant. According to an internal company memo obtained by media outlets, Meta has already created an early prototype of the device and is planning real-world testing within the next year, with broader rollout ambitions extending toward 2027.
Technology analysts believe the project stems directly from Meta’s acquisition of AI wearable startup Limitless in late 2025. The startup’s flagship product was an AI-powered pendant that users could clip onto clothing or wear around the neck. The device continuously recorded conversations, generated transcripts, and created searchable AI-generated summaries throughout the day. Meta said at the time that the acquisition would help accelerate its development of AI-enabled wearable technologies.
Learning from Earlier Failures
Several Silicon Valley startups—including companies behind AI wearables such as Humane’s AI Pin and Rabbit’s R1—previously attempted to popularize AI-powered wearable devices. However, concerns surrounding privacy, pricing, and everyday usefulness prevented those products from gaining mainstream success.
Despite those setbacks, major technology firms including Meta and OpenAI continue investing heavily in the category. Meta’s latest strategy reportedly focuses not only on consumers but also on enterprise and workplace users. Internal documents indicate the company is planning a dedicated business subscription service called “Wearables for Work,” designed to support meetings, presentations, note-taking, and workplace productivity through AI-powered glasses and pendants.
Attempt to Revive Reality Labs
The initiative is also closely tied to Meta’s struggling hardware division, Reality Labs. According to Meta’s first-quarter 2026 financial results, Reality Labs recorded losses exceeding $4 billion during the quarter alone. The division has accumulated tens of billions of dollars in losses over recent years as Meta shifted focus from virtual reality and the metaverse toward AI-powered wearables.
Company executives reportedly hope that AI pendants, expanded smart-glasses offerings, and subscription-based workplace services will help reverse Reality Labs’ fortunes and strengthen Meta’s position in the rapidly growing AI hardware market.
Meta has not yet issued an official public statement regarding the reported AI pendant project.
