Iranian Drone Strike Causes Limited Damage at RAF Akrotiri Base in Cyprus
Reports have emerged of a drone attack on the United Kingdom’s Akrotiri airbase located in Cyprus. The Cypriot government has confirmed that a drone struck the base, causing “limited damage.” The Royal Air Force (RAF) Akrotiri airbase is situated near Limassol.
Cypriot government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said that the authorities there are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the United Kingdom.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer had initially stated that he would not allow his country’s bases to be used for an attack on Iran. However, yesterday he said that although the United Kingdom would not be directly involved in any strike, it had agreed, at the request of the United States, to allow the base to be used. The drone attack occurred shortly thereafter.
Citing Cyprus Mail and the British Defence Secretary, media reports said that Iran was behind the attack and that its ballistic missile or drone struck the area. Although it was initially believed that the projectile had not been launched directly at Cyprus, the incident has created intense tension in the region.
