Singapore Commits Over S$1 Billion to Strengthen AI Research by 2030
In a bid to further strengthen its position in the global competition for artificial intelligence (AI) research, Singapore has announced a major government-level investment plan extending through 2030. The country’s government said it will invest more than 1 billion Singapore dollars in public AI research during this period—an amount equivalent to approximately BDT 77 billion. The information was reported by Reuters.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information said the primary objective of the investment would be the development of responsible and resource-efficient AI technologies. Alongside this, the government will place strong emphasis on building AI-skilled human resources, ranging from the pre-university level to university faculty members.
A portion of the investment will also be allocated to enhancing industry capabilities for the adoption and application of AI technologies. Earlier, in 2024, the Singapore government earmarked 500 million Singapore dollars for high-performance computing infrastructure aimed at supporting AI innovation.
In addition, another 500 million Singapore dollars has been invested in research and development through the national initiative AI Singapore. In 2023, researchers under this programme unveiled ‘SEA-LION’, an open-source large language model based on Southeast Asian languages, which is already being used by various institutions.
