Broadcom Boosts AI Battle with New ‘Thor Ultra’ Networking Chip
In a move to intensify competition with NVIDIA in the artificial intelligence (AI) market, U.S.-based technology giant Broadcom has unveiled a new networking chip named “Thor Ultra.” The announcement was made on Tuesday in San Francisco, according to Reuters.
Broadcom stated that the Thor Ultra chip will enable data centers to connect hundreds of thousands of computing chips simultaneously, enhancing their capacity to power complex AI models like ChatGPT.
The chip is designed to directly compete with NVIDIA’s networking interface chips, further strengthening Broadcom’s position in the AI data center market.
Earlier on Monday, Broadcom announced that it would supply OpenAI with custom chips boasting a total capacity of 10 gigawatts starting from the second half of 2026—a development seen as a significant challenge to NVIDIA’s dominance in AI accelerators.
Broadcom’s Chief Executive Hock Tan said the company’s potential share in the AI chip market could reach between USD 60 billion and USD 90 billion by 2027.
