Google’s digital payment service, Google Pay, is set to be officially launched in Bangladesh on June 24 at a hotel in the capital. The service is being introduced by City Bank in partnership with Google, Mastercard, and Visa, aiming to offer a streamlined payment experience and enhanced financial access—particularly for freelancers and remittance recipients.

The launch event will be attended by Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, as the chief guest. Tracey Ann Jacobson, Chargé d’Affaires at the British High Commission in Dhaka, will also be present on the occasion.

In its initial phase, only City Bank Mastercard and Visa cardholders will be able to link their cards to Google Wallet and make transactions using Google Pay. The service is expected to be expanded to other banks in the future, offering broader accessibility.

With Google Pay, users will be able to make seamless, secure, and contactless payments both locally and internationally at any Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal by simply tapping their Android phones. This eliminates the need to carry physical cards.

To use the service, customers will need an Android smartphone and must download the Google Pay app to link their City Bank cards. Once set up, users can pay at stores or restaurants simply by tapping their phones.

Google Pay does not charge any transaction fees. Instead of sharing actual card details during transactions, the platform uses a tokenization system to ensure user data security.

Industry insiders believe this move marks a major step forward in Bangladesh’s journey toward a cashless economy and will be particularly beneficial for digital professionals and international payment recipients.
