The International Telecommunication and Information Society Day was celebrated in Dhaka on Saturday with a vibrant and inclusive event held at the BTRC headquarters in Agargaon. This year’s celebration brought renewed focus on the country’s telecom capabilities and the dynamic engagement of young innovators, adding a new dimension to the observance.

One of the key highlights of the event was the official launch of BTRC’s e-license system, alongside the presentation of the prestigious “Avash” digital stick—crafted with golden technology—to five individuals who lost their vision during the July uprising. In addition, ten awards were presented in recognition of notable contributions to the telecom and ICT sectors over the past year. These included five teams for national achievements, four teams that won in international competitions, three institutions, and three individuals.

The inaugural ceremony at the BTRC conference hall was attended by Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports; Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology; Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Shish Haider Chowdhury, ICT Secretary; Zahirul Islam, Secretary of Posts and Telecommunications; and BTRC Chairman Major General (Retd.) Md. Emdad Ul Bari.

In his special remarks, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb expressed the government’s commitment to ensure gender equality in technology by transforming every tailoring hub in the country into a tech hub. “We want to empower our rural women who are still busy making or selling clothes by enhancing their technological skills,” he said. “Alongside the earlier ‘She’ project, a new initiative titled ‘Shobuj Pata’ has been launched.”

He added, “In the National Innovation Challenge, priority will be given to women entrepreneurs and professionals. Similarly, women will also be prioritized in the ‘Shobuj Pata’ initiative.”

Addressing women’s safety in cyberspace, he stated, “The government is working to involve more women in the country’s ICT sector. The Cyber Security Ordinance will be passed within the next few weeks, which will enhance the protection of women in cyberspace.”
