China has expressed its interest in assisting Bangladesh in generating electricity through waste management across all city corporations. Additionally, the country has shown willingness to help develop a comprehensive sports ecosystem in Bangladesh.

The announcement came during a courtesy meeting on Wednesday (April 30) between Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Advisor to the Interim Government's Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.

Welcoming the Chinese envoy, Advisor Asif Mahmud said, “China has been a longstanding development and trade partner of Bangladesh. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Chinese government’s pledge to gift a 1,000-bed hospital has garnered widespread public appreciation. The recent Bangladesh-China joint drone show, watched by millions across the country, stands as a testament to the importance of cultural exchange between the two nations.”

The advisor stressed the government’s focus on waste-to-energy initiatives and said, “The government is keen to generate electricity from waste in every city corporation with Chinese cooperation.”

In response, Ambassador Yao Wen said that China is indeed interested in waste management in city corporation areas. “We will undertake projects to ensure that electricity can be generated from waste in every city corporation, one after another,” he noted.

Turning attention to the development of sports, Advisor Asif Mahmud emphasized the potential of Bangladesh’s sporting landscape. “There are 55 sports federations in Bangladesh. Beyond cricket and football, there is room for significant progress and international achievements in other disciplines as well,” he said, underscoring the need to develop a sports ecosystem with Chinese support. He also highlighted the importance of Olympic-standard training facilities for coaches and athletes.
